A definitive guide for the west coast diver, with hundreds of great photos.
Kaplan, Eugene H., et. al. 1999. A Field Guide to Coral Reefs: Caribbean and Florida (a Peterson Field Guide)
If you dive in these areas you MUST have this book. The book shows how to identify quickly and accurately the common inhabitants of the reefs. Carrying just this book alone can keep
adults & kids occupied for hours marking off the fish you have seen and hope to locate. Tell the stories when you saw the critters and let your teenagers share theirs too, it doesn't get any better than this.
Page, Lawrence M. et al. 1998. A Field Guide to Freshwater Fishes : North American North of Mexico (a Peterson Field Guide)
A tremendous guide to all 790 known species in the specified range, with some 700 illustrations (most in
color), 377 distribution maps and additional line drawings of key details; information range, habitat, and behavior, and status of endangered fishes. WOW!
Hardhat Diving, Commercial Diving
LaFontaine, Bruce. 1999. Submarines and Underwater Exploration. Mineola, New York: Dover Publications, Inc.
Don't get too excited, technically this is a coloring book, 44 pages worth, for ages 4-8. The drawings include many early diving devices, essentially tracing the development of both divers and submarines. Your kids will have fun coloring , and you will
secretly enjoy the intelligent text that explains the old age treatment of "exhausting carbon dioxide."
Lyons, Leon. 1988. Helmets of the Deep. Private printing: P.O. Box 190, St. Augustine, FL, 32085-0190.
This is a collector's item. I saw it and I loved it, but I'm not a collector. Original printing of 900, I hear there are some left at just under $300. Lots of great color photos and text.
Parker, Torrence R. 1997. 20,000 Jobs Under the Sea: A History of Diving and Underwater Engineering. Palos Verdes, CA: Subsea Archives.
Another wonderful history with super pictures, still published but pricey. Hey, you get what you pay for. A memorable gift if you feel guilty getting it for yourself.

Two highly respected and credentialed leaders in their field join forces to safely guide the diver in this exciting specialty.
Quinn, William P. 1973. Shipwrecks Around Cape Cod. Lower Cape Publishing Company.
This is an older version of later rehashes, so don't be fooled by the publication date. This book has endured. Great black and white photos including many aerials of wrecks which are
now underwater wreck sites.
Underwater Archeology, Treasure, Marine History

A good read by the discoverer of the pirate ship Whydah, discusses the operation and finds of the expedition.
